The statute sets the small claims limit at $10,000, CONDITIONAL CARVE-OUT: the court has NO jurisdiction over collection of a debt greater than $5,000 arising out of a consumer credit transaction (15 U.S.C. § 1679a) or medical debt (18 V.S.A. § 9481). Claims over $3,500 give the defendant a right to request a special assignment of a judicial officer. Claim-splitting to get under the cap is prohibited..
