(TEXT EFFECTIVE 1/01/26) Notwithstanding the total amount of a debt or contract, a "small claim" means a right of action cognizable by a court if the debt or damage does not exceed $10,000 exclusive of interest and costs. It does not include an action involving the title to real estate.
The statute sets the small claims limit at $10,000, EFFECTIVE-DATE SPLIT, and the section is expressly captioned '(CONTAINS TEXT WITH VARYING EFFECTIVE DATES)'. $6,000 applied under the text effective until 2026-01-01; $10,000 applies under the text effective 2026-01-01. The read date (2026-08-21) is after that changeover, so $10,000 is operative.. That figure is the one the section states; the words above are the section itself.
