How much can I sue for in small claims court in Iowa?

Answered for: Iowa

A civil action for a money judgment where the amount in controversy is six thousand five hundred dollars or less for actions commenced on or after July 1, 2018, exclusive of interest and costs.

The statute sets the small claims limit at $6,500, Exclusive of interest and costs, for actions commenced on or after July 1, 2018 (it was $5,000 before that date). Separate concurrent jurisdiction exists for forcible entry and detainer, replevin, and certain tax/garnishment matters at the same $6,500 figure.. That figure is the one the section states; the words above are the section itself.
