How much does it cost to file an application with the tal?

Verified 31 July 2026 Law of Quebec and Canada General information, not legal advice

Short answer

In Quebec, the filing fees at the Tribunal administratif du logement (TAL, Quebec's rental board) vary with the nature of the application and, for some applications, with the amount of the rent. People receiving benefits under a last-resort financial assistance program are exempt from them.

In detail

Since April 1, 2026, applications relating to rent cost $59 where the monthly rent is $350 or less, $70 between $351 and $600, and $92 above $600. Other common applications, including eviction, the relocation indemnity and non-payment of rent, cost $92. Certain administrative steps cost $47.

The application can be filed online, by mail or in person. Online, the fees are paid directly through a secure platform.

The successful party may also recover certain notification costs. The amounts are adjusted from time to time: it is best to check them on the official page before filing.

What to document

The receipt for the fees you paid, the file number you were assigned, the filing date and proof that the other party was notified. These items are asked for at every stage of the file.

Put your facts in writing, free. Writing your version down early, keeping your documents dated and preparing your questions for a lawyer: the tool is there to document, never to advise.

What this page is not

This is general legal information about the law of Quebec and Canada, dated and sourced. It is not legal advice, not a strategy, and not a prediction about the outcome of a case. In Quebec, only lawyers and notaries may give legal advice (Act respecting the Barreau du Québec, ss. 128 and 133). Laws and amounts change: the official source always prevails over us.
